ON HAZEL STREET

Doer of this and this.

Lover of:
jam-packed bookshelves
parentheses
maps
dry cappuccinos
a good turn of phrase
xacto knives and micron pens
airports and train stations
pie
sass
trees, and walking among them
windows, and staring out of them
old stone buildings
old cameras
correctly spelled words
well designed things

metromag:

Local literati sisters Hazel & Wren have built a strong online writing community through their website, hazelandwren.com, which features a unique online open mic that allows writers to share their work. Tonight, for the first time, the sisters are bringing their virtual world to an actual stage.

Last weekend. My pal, master carver Elmer Marting, gives a demonstration on wood carving.

Trimming goodies for Saturday’s Twin Cities Book Festival. See you there?

Be sure to stop by the Hazel & Wren table for your bookmark (while supplies last)!

For those of you looking to workshop your creative writing piece, the next (free) online Open Mic over at the Hazel & Wren website is now accepting submissions of your work-in-progress until tomorrow (Tues) night!

Spread the word to your writer friends!

Here’s how it works:

Submit your work-in-progress (it can be any form or genre; the only restrictions are length restrictions) on TODAY AND TOMORROW ONLY (that’s Sept 12-13) by using this form. On Wednesday at 12:00 am, all submissions go live, and a 24-hour feedback frenzy begins! If you’re curious to see what it was like last month, check it out here.

The fine print:

Due to space limitations and simplicity’s sake, please follow the Open Mic guidelines below. If you submit more than the allowed length, the editors will post an excerpt of their choosing to fit the guidelines.

Limit of one submission per writer, for each Open Mic.

Poetry: 40 lines max
Fiction and Nonfiction: 500 words max

We cannot stress this rule enough: Submitters must provide constructive feedback on at least one other person’s work. We’re a community!

All work is owned by its creator, and copyright protected as such. Each work in the Open Mic series is a work in progress, and presented by the writers in order to get feedback that will help them workshop each piece to the best version possible.

This mailbox is easily three feet off the ground.

Nevermind how, what I’d like to know is why a raccoon print is on said mailbox.

Raccoon A: Hey, I can jump higher than you.
Raccoon B:  Can not.
A: Can so! I’ll prove it. See that mailbox?
B: Yeah.
A: I’m gonna hit it.
B: Will not.
A: Watch me.
B: I’m not watching.
A: *smack*
B: Doesn’t prove anything, jerk.
